Flood-stricken parts of the UK are bracing themselves for more rain after an "unprecedented" deluge swamped homes and brought down bridges. Forecasters predict Saturday will bring 15mm (0.5in) to 40mm (1.6in) of rain to Cumbria, where police said 75 people spent the night in emergency shelters. Work to examine the safety of 1,800 bridges across Cumbria is getting under way after heavy rain and floods weakened some structures. Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered the review during a visit on Saturday, when he pledged £1m for flooded communities. More than 1,300 homes were affected and people have been advised not to return for fear of hampering recovery efforts. Much of the UK faces more heavy rain.
