Britain is set to be hit by more heavy rain and high winds, with gusts of up to 60mph possible in exposed areas, forecasters said.

More than 40 flood alerts, including five flood warnings, are in place and downpours later in the week could see northern and western areas lashed with up to six inches of rain in just two days on Wednesday and Thursday, said Meteogroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association.

Forecaster Matthew Dobson said: "We expect to see quite a lot of wet weather in the north and west areas, which could lead to flooding. It is looking like there will be strong winds of 50-60mph across the north and west."

Parts of Britain will be battered by gale force winds and heavy rain over the next few days, forecasters have said..

The Met Office put out warnings for downpours and gusts of wind of up to 60mph for Wales, the North West of England and Northern Ireland until Friday.
The outlook is similar for Saturday when the warnings of bad weather extend down to South West England.

People in north-west England and south-west Scotland face a high risk of their homes being damaged by flooding, the Environment Agency is warning.
There are 30 flood warnings in place across the UK, but BBC forecasters said Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway were at greatest risk on Thursday.
North Wales has already been hit by heavy rain and has had some flooding.
