But the man behind the hygiene horrors told the court he didn’t know he had a problem - and was waiting for environmental health inspectors to tell him otherwise before he cleaned up.

Kam Long To, owner of The New Hop On in Sheriff Hill, Gateshead, was fined nearly £2,000 by the town’s magistrates.
