Roads, Gritting and Weather update at 2:45pm
23 Dec 2010
Major routes around the County are passable with care at present although some may be slushy following earlier snow showers. Minor routes are passable with extreme care in most areas.
A band of snow is forecast to pass through Northumberland from North to South this afternoon and evening with a risk of accumulations of 3-6 cm and up to 10 cm over higher ground. This is expected to clear by midnight to leave a dry night with frost and ice again becoming a problem.
Operations will continue until around 21:00 and commence again at 05:00 in the morning.
Reporting Problem areas:
Any problem areas should be reported to The Customer Service Centre on 0845 600 6400 or email ask@northumberland.gov.uk the request will then be logged directly on our Severe Weather system and appropriate action will be taken.
*** Please note that we do not plough, grit or maintain the A1 or 19 roads. Please call the highways agency 0300 123 5000 (this is their preferred method)
Bin Disruption & HWRCs
23 Dec 2010
Refuse collections have been severely disrupted by snow and icy conditions in most areas following recent snowfall. Residents in affected areas are advised to put out their general or recycling bin for their scheduled collection, and the council will attempt to collect missed bins within 24 hours. Collections are generally later than normal as crews attempt to empty scheduled and missed bins.
Berwick areas – scheduled collections plus missed bins in Berwick town are being attempted today.
Alnwick areas – scheduled collections and missed bins are being attempted today.
Morpeth areas – scheduled collections and missed bins are being attempted today.
Hexham areas - crews are collecting waste today and will attempt to collect missed bins in the Hexham and Elsdon areas later today.
Blyth area - collections are being attempted today.
Wansbeck areas – crews are collecting waste today. Despite several attempts this week, there are some missed bins in Ashington, Bedlington, Ellington, West Sleekburn and Stakeford. The council will attempt to collect these missed bins today and on CHRISTMAS EVE. Bulky waste and bring site glass collections, bin and bag deliveries have all been suspended to assist with refuse collections.
Household Waste Recovery Centres are open but residents are advised to take extreme caution on approach and site roads. Whilst every effort is made to keep the sites open from 8am to 6pm, the weather conditions do sometimes force the sites to open late and close early.
Commercial waste - the Council will return for any commercial waste collections that have been missed during the adverse weather conditions as soon as it is possible to do so. For customers who have wheeled bins, then the normal policy of only collecting waste that is contained within the wheeled bin will be temporarily relaxed and excess bagged commercial waste left alongside the container will also be removed when the next collection takes place. In these circumstances the Council will not offer a rebate.
Further information will be released through ‘Alerts’ and is available from the ‘Arrangements for Adverse Weather’ page.
