I canna believe that our new mayor ( an interlowper ) wanted to do away with the mayors walk round the May Fair cos its an outdated tradition !!! maybe it would be a good idea for him to keep walking right on up Cstlegate and oot of Berwick on Friday !!!!

havent got a clue about freemen jj but an awful lot of them seem to be strangers and they probably never set foot in the toon again after they get their certificate . I do think if your a freeman your allowed to pee in crawfords alley on a sat night without getting fined !!!

Freeman is a hereditary position, passed from Father to Son, or in old times by being apprenticed to a Freeman. Hence folk that never look near Berwick can be Freeman, while those of us who have lived our lives here, cannot. Now also passed from Father to daughter.

Cheers Tweedsider, so its nowt to do with being born within the walls at all then......i must have made that bit up. How much do they get? and do other towns do it?? and when they built the town hall why didnt they leave enough room for cars to go down both sides???

I hate the term "interlouper" look around and see where people who do things in the town come from and suprise suprise they dont come from Berwick but love it and want it to be good again.

Don't like to disagree with you Sam, and I appreciate that many newcomers to the town do make a positive contribution, while locals standby waiting for something to go wrong and fail. The councils regeneration team, set up by an interlouper, served no purpose other than keeping themselves in jobs. The much criticised lack of parking on Marygate, was encouraged by "Consultants" while the council was run by strangers, do I need to go on?
